Bamboo flooring has been around for centuries in Asia but it is only over the past few years that it has become a popular choice for homeowners in the west.  With all the current talk about going green, bamboo flooring gets the thumbs up from environmentalists because it is such a renewable resource.  Others simply love it because it is durable, easy to maintain and looks wonderful in any home.

Style is everything and bamboo flooring certainly delivers.  Typically bamboo flooring is very light, almost white, but you can also purchase flooring that has been tinted and finished to a darker hue.  Other variations in color can also be created when the manufacturer steams the bamboo before creating the planks, which creates a warm amber look.  Texture varies as well; depending on whether or not the bamboo was woven before processing, which produces a grainier finish than solid grain flooring, which has a polished, almost glass like appearance.

As it is actually made from a grass, people might imagine that bamboo flooring is flimsy, but that is far from the case.  Bamboo has been used by the Japanese to create industrial scaffolding for years so it is certainly tough enough to stand up to an active family and plenty of foot traffic.  It is as easy, if not easier, to maintain than any other hardwood flooring material.  Over the years bamboo flooring will begin to warm and meld into a variety of hues and tones that are exceptionally pleasing to the eye.

The cost will vary according to the material supplier you choose but the price tag is similar to other hardwood flooring choices.  To make the most of your investment, spend just a little extra to have your bamboo flooring professionally installed,  as it is never easy to get hardwood flooring down just right by yourself and even the smallest mistakes can ruin the whole look.
