Surviving a Major Home Remodeling Project

Any major home remodeling project involves a great deal of disruption.  Walls are opened up, cabinets ripped out, wiring exposed.  Midway through a remodeling project it can be hard to envision the wonderful results that will come out of all that mess and disruption.  There is no doubt that home remodeling is stressful at times but there are things you can do to make the whole process a little easier on the nerves.

Make a Plan for Everyday Life to Go On – Your house may be a construction zone but you still need hot meals, clean clothes and a daily shower.  In an ideal world escaping to a local motel or a kindly relative’s house while the construction continues is the best plan, but for some that is simply not possible.

If you are staying home during a remodeling project make all your preparations before the contractors arrive.  If the kitchen is being worked on, move the microwave and fridge to another room, so that you can at least prepare dinner however makeshift it may be.  If the water is going to be shut off for long periods of time, stock up on bottled water and make plans to shower at a neighbor’s house.

Control the Clutter – Mess is inevitable during a home remodeling project but the mass of trash and dust that accumulates should be controlled on a daily basis.  Before the project begins discuss waste removal with your contractor and make sure that all the workers in your home know where trash is to go.  Hiring a dumpster to sit in the driveway for the duration of the project and provide a central waste disposal area is the best way to go.

Protect Your Stuff – Dust will drift all over the house during a home remodeling project, however careful your contractor is.  Make sure all your fine furniture and pricey electronics are well covered, or better still removed all together for the duration.

Stay in Touch – Even if you have chosen to move out while a remodeling project is underway it is essential that you stay involved and communicate with your contractors every day, to ensure that the project progresses as smoothly as possible.

I am having a problem viewing your site clearly with the newest version of Opera. It looks ok in IE6 and Firefox however.
